After successfully completing recruit school, you'll commence as a Probationary Correctional Officer on a starting salary of $92,677.
Up to 8 weeks annual leave
Enjoy more time with family, explore Tasmania or focus on your hobbies with up to 8 weeks’ annual leave in a 56-week period. You’ll also have access to a range of other leave entitlements, including leave for caring or parenting responsibilities, bereavement, study, adoption, sickness, and emergency services, sports or cultural activities.
Flexible employment options
There are two employment options to suit different lifestyles, including day work and shift work. Correctional Officers who choose shift work will participate in a rotating roster of 8-hour, 10-hour and 12-hour shifts, including days and nights, weekends and public holidays. A key benefit of this roster is the ability to access up to 8 weeks of annual leave.

Learning and development
We’re committed to supporting the ongoing professional development of all our staff. Officers take part in regular mandatory training to make sure they can perform their duties safely and confidently, especially when it comes to emergency response.
Throughout your career, you can also begin or continue accredited training. These qualifications help you build specialised skills and prepare for future leadership roles. Available opportunities may include:
- Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Adult Custodial Specialisation)
- Certificate IV in Leadership and Management
- Diploma of Leadership and Management.
Career progression
Working in Corrections offers a wide range of opportunities. The TPS operates reception prisons, women’s and men’s maximum, medium and minimum security facilities, as well as the Southern Remand Centre.
There are a variety of career pathways available, including:
- Correctional Officer (Grades 1-3)
- First Class Officer
- Correctional Supervisor
- Superintendent
- General Manager
- Project roles
- Specialist teams, such as the Dedicated Response Team, Tactical Response Group, Security and Intelligence, and Training.
Staff are supported to grow and develop their careers through a structured Performance Development process that's facilitated between employees and their managers.
